Priestly Obedience and the Bishop! The Vatican's Vision of a Bishop: Father, Brother and Friend for the Common Good
Excerpts:
The Vatican says that the Bishop must be guided by certain fundamental principles:
The Principle of Truth
The Bishop must have truth at the heart of his pastoral action. «Pastoral activity is
authentic when it is anchored in truth» and thus inauthentic when it is not. (57)
A Bishop
is not allowed to lie to his priests, lie about his priests, or ruin the good reputation of
his priests. Restitution is required if this is done. Further, if a priest provides his bishop
with information he requested, and then the bishop cannot claim that he does not have it.
Priests and Faithful in Canon Law: A Right to be Heard and a Right to be «Right»
...In the case that a Bishop’s conduct does not comport with the above standards, Priests
and faithful have the right to seek justice according to Canon Law. Thus while the «blindness» of
obedience is nuanced in a certain sense - these rights enshrined in Canon Law seek to ensure that
the «blindness of justice» is not.
First, all Christ’s faithful, irrespective of their social or ecclesial status, have certain
inalienable rights that cannot be violated. Second, no one has the right to deny or unduly restrict
the exercise of those rights without a serious and just cause. Third, Priests and faithful have the
right to defend and vindicate their rights before the competent ecclesiastical forum in accordance
with the law. Fourth, when judged before a competent court, they have the right to be judged in
accord with the provisions of law, to be applied with equity. Fifth, the application of penalties
must be done in strict compliance with the norms of law. (See Can. 219-223)
October 18, 2011: Bishop Zurek finally breaks media silence ... to cast aspersions
The bishop is obviously no stranger to the spin room. Following this deprecatory statement, there was a flurry of denigrating articles from the usual suspects. I'm thinking in particular of the Catholic Culture article (no author -- I guess the article wrote itself) where Phil Lawler has been leading the charge on libeling Father Pavone's good name. And of course the ever pesky gadfly Mark Shea felt it necessary to chime in without all the facts. How's this for showing
"respect" for a Catholic priest in good standing...
October 16, 2011: Lives at Risk - Sequestering Fr. Frank
When the doctors who perform abortions finally come to the realization that they have taken the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of babies, they need a special kind of healing. Dr. Philip Ney, a Canadian psychiatrist and recognized expert in the field of post-abortion trauma, founded the Society of Centurions to give these men and women exactly that.
October 14, 2011: Canon lawyer advised Fr. Pavone not to attend private meeting with bishop Fr. Deibel, in his official statement released today, says that
requests to have a mediator present at any meeting between Pavone
and the bishop have not been acknowledged. “Several Church
officials have made it clear that they believe mediation is
necessary, and that they are willing to undertake a role as
mediators,” he said. “Unfortunately, Bishop Zurek has not
responded to or even acknowledged any of these requests.”
October 5,2011: Life Dynamics founder Mark Crutcher has released a video decrying what he calls the "outrageous" treatment of Fr. Pavone ever since he was summoned to the Diocese of Amarillo.
'Baby Joseph' Dies in His Canadian Home
Surrounded by Family
The
baby who in March was hours from being pulled off life support at
a Canadian hospital but was rescued by the national director
of Priests for Life and taken to the U.S. for treatment, has died
Tuesday night at his Windsor, Ontario home.
September 19, 2011: Cleveland Bishop Supports Father Pavone
and Priests for Life: Urges Continued Support
"Please keep Father Pavone in your prayers. He is currently facing some difficult days as he negotiates with his bishop. The work he had done since founding Priests for Life must continue as we face the future.
Please continue to support Priests for Life."
- Most Rev. Roger W. Gries, O.S.B.,Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland
